Malaysia
Malaysia’s Wayang Kulit Siam is particularly distinctive, closely intertwined with both Malay and Buddhist cultures. The performances are generally based on Hindu epics such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, celebrating bravery, love, and the triumph of light over darkness. There are four types of shadow puppetry currently found in Malaysia: Wayang Kulit Melayu (Malay Shadow Puppetry), Wayang Kulit Gedek, Wayang Kulit Purwa (Javanese Classical Shadow Puppetry), and Wayang Kulit Kelantan. All four types are only performed on the Malaysian Peninsula.A trip to Kelantan is incomplete without watching a captivating and humorous shadow puppet performance. The scripts for Kelantan’s Wayang Kulit are mostly adapted from the Indian epic Ramayana.
Indonesia
Indonesian shadow puppetry, also known as Wayang Kulit, is a traditional art form where leather puppets are used to tell stories behind a white screen, illuminated by light to create shadows. It is widely popular in Indonesia, with its stories often drawn from the Hindu epics Mahabharata and Ramayana. The puppets are made from intricately carved and painted buffalo hide, manipulated by a single puppeteer known as a dalang, accompanied by gamelan music and chanting. Performances often last through the night.Though similar in form, Wayang Kulit differs from Chinese shadow puppetry in materials, performance style, and thematic content. Chinese puppets are typically made from cowhide or cardboard and feature a broader range of themes, whereas Indonesian puppets are more finely crafted and focused mainly on Hindu epics.Wayang Kulit is a deeply cherished traditional art form in Indonesia, beloved for its exquisite craftsmanship, distinctive performance style, and rich cultural meaning.
Turkey
Turkey’s shadow puppetry is known as Karagöz, a beloved traditional folk art that holds a significant place in Turkish culture. With a history dating back over 500 years to the Ottoman Empire, performances are often staged during Ramadan nights, as well as at weddings or circumcision ceremonies. The repertoire typically includes both comedic and serious plays. Karagöz and Hacivat are the two most iconic characters, known for their exaggerated gestures and witty banter, which reflect folk wisdom. According to legend, they were originally construction workers building a mosque in the Ottoman city of Bursa.Though the storyline tends to follow a familiar structure, the characters—especially Karagöz and Hacivat—often improvise, commenting on current events. This has made shadow puppetry a platform for social commentary and political satire, and a popular form of cultural entertainment in Turkey.
France 法国
French shadow puppetry, also known as “French Lantern Shadows,” traces its origins to Chinese shadow puppetry. It was introduced to France in the mid-18th century, reportedly brought back in 1767 by French missionaries. Performances in cities like Paris and Marseille generated widespread interest at the time. The French adapted Chinese shadow puppetry to develop a version with local flair, creating what became known as ombres chinoises françaises (French Chinese Shadows). One example is the musical shadow play The Tale of the Fox, inspired by the classic medieval French literary work. Using vivid animal characters and imaginative plot twists, it presents a colorful stage and delivers allegorical stories that blend cultural heritage with entertainment.
India 印度
India has a long history of shadow puppetry, with regional forms such as Tholpavakoothu, a traditional art unique to Kerala. The name means “leather puppet dance.”
Indian shadow puppetry often tells Hindu mythological stories and differs from Chinese forms in its focus on solemn religious expression rather than popular entertainment. Performances are usually held in temples and serve as a medium for conveying religious narratives and moral teachings.
